M1 widening works - major changes to road layout

Drivers planning to leave the M1 at Junction 26 southbound or Junction 27 northbound over the coming weeks are warned to make sure they are in the correct lane much earlier than usual due to changes to the road layout in the widening works. The changes are part of the work to widen to motorway between junctions 25 and 28 and will allow the middle lanes to be resurfaced to bring them up to the same standard as the new hard shoulder and lane one.
The resurfacing will be carried out in two phases; the first will affect the southbound carriageway where the road layout will be changed between 10pm on Saturday, 30 May and 5am the following morning. The resurfacing work will be carried out between the same times each night for around a week. During the day, traffic will be split so that vehicles will be running in the existing lanes two and three as usual but lane one traffic will be moved over to use the new hard shoulder.
This means that when the work is carried out on the southbound carriageway, vehicles wanting to leave the motorway at Junction 26 will have to be in the nearside lane before they reach Junction 27.
Wide loads over 9ft 6in (2.9m) will be directed to straddle lanes 2 and 3 and will therefore not be able to leave the M1 at Junction 26. Instead they will be diverted to Junction 25 and to travel back up the motorway where they can leave at Junction 26 northbound. The work will move to the northbound carriageway overnight on Saturday, 6 June where the same layout will be introduced in the opposite direction.
Similarly, when the work moves to the northbound carriageway, vehicles wanting to leave the motorway at Junction 27 must be in the nearside lane before they reach junction 26. Wide loads will be directed to straddle lanes 2 and 3 and will not be able to exit the M1 at Junction 27. Instead they will be diverted to Junction 28 and travel back down the southbound carriageway where they can leave at Junction 27.
The northbound resurfacing work will take place between 10pm and 5am for approximately one week. During the night-time works on both carriageways, all traffic will be diverted on to the new hard shoulder.
